Moose Montage

It’s been several years since I’ve posted photos of moose calves romping in our backyard. This has become an annual event in May and June, and is a highlight of the summer for me.

Here is some adorableness from 2019:

I’ll never know for sure, but in my mind this was a pair of little bulls. That poor Mama had her hooves full protecting these rambunctious, head-butting, hide-and-seek-playing zoomy twins.

Last summer we hosted another Mama with twins. I watched her stand vigil over her sleeping calves for over an hour before lying down herself.

This year’s Mama moose has a single calf, and I can’t help but notice how much more in tune they are with one another. Rather than romping around with a sibling, this calf mirrors or mimics its Mama’s every move:

This Mama nurses and nuzzles a lot.

To be honest, she seems a bit enamored with her newborn calf!

This year’s pair has moved on for now, but I’m hoping they’ll spend the night with us again sometime soon.

We see moose throughout the year, but spring sightings with mothers and calves are extra special. It’s even better when they choose our backyard to rest and recuperate, and I’m rooting for this pair’s safe return!
