Traditions in Transition

Our annual quest for the perfect Christmas tree is one of our family’s most sacred holiday traditions. Last December (in 2023) Sam was over 2,000 miles away in his first year of college, so plans had to pivot. Maggie was plenty capable of harvesting her selected spruce all by herself, but we sure did miss having our full team together that day. We brought the tree … Continue reading Traditions in Transition

Holiday Highlights

Ahhhh, holidays. The time of year we happily trade the hustle and bustle of everyday life for a different kind of crazy. It’s magical madness: a season where the refrigerator is always full and the mailbox is never empty. We silence our alarm clocks and turn on the Christmas music. We shop, wrap, decorate, bake, host, visit. Santa makes his naughty and nice list, while … Continue reading Holiday Highlights

Pumpkin Mania

Craft pumpkins. Carving pumpkins. Sugar pumpkins. Pumpkin pies and pumpkin seeds… this has been the pumpkiniest October ever! I’m glad the kids agree that you’re never too old to carve a jack-o-lantern, and that tradition continued for another year. Sam and Lucy went for traditional jack-o-lanterns. Maggie picked a ghost template, and Clark and collaborated on the “Boo” ghost. He gutted it, and I carved. … Continue reading Pumpkin Mania

It’s a Wrap

Every year it baffles me how weeks of shopping, cooking, planning, and scheming explode in a few short hours. On Christmas morning our living room transforms from a tidy, shiny, idyllic paradise into something reminiscent of a war zone. New socks, hoodies, books, and gadgets lay strewn in haphazard piles. Rogue pieces of scotch tape stick to our new slippers as we wander about, stuffing … Continue reading It’s a Wrap

Treepiphany

Sadly but not shockingly, the year is rounding out with a Christmas tree shortage. Really 2020?! Fortunately, we harvest our tree from the Chugach National Forest each year, which has 5.5 million acres of spruce to share. Access roads and pullouts weren’t plowed like usual, but eventually we found a spot to safely stash the truck while we wandered into the woods. It was an … Continue reading Treepiphany

Husker Holidaze

Usually we opt to let the magic of Christmas unfold in our own living room, and we’ve dedicated a decade of Decembers to creating our very own holiday traditions. On Christmas day it’s usually just the four of us, hanging out in Christmas pajamas while approximately 2,815 miles away our families are gathered around tables, playing cards, sharing turkeys and hams and prime ribs, exchanging … Continue reading Husker Holidaze

Easter Cheers

There are friends, there are families, and then there are friends who feel like family.  We are grateful for our Alaskan circle of friends every day, but especially on holidays.  How lucky that we have children close in age who genuinely enjoy each other’s company?  Our kids have relationships similar to the ones I had with my cousins when I was younger, and it’s been … Continue reading Easter Cheers

Merry Magical Christmas

I’m nestled under a blanket on our couch, writing by the light of the Christmas tree.  The shiny gifts underneath have been replaced with a blanket of spruce needles that keep dropping from this poor tree, but it still looks beautiful to me. For as long as I can remember we’ve plugged our tree lights into a Clapper.  I still remember the ridiculous commercials growing … Continue reading Merry Magical Christmas

Tree Day 2016

No matter how busy life gets, our family will always make time for our annual Christmas tree excursion.  This December’s weekend commitments included soccer games, horse chores, birthday parties, book club, gobs of homework, a band concert, and a debate tournament.  No matter.  We blocked out one lone Sunday on the calendar and headed to the woods. Good choice. Sunrise isn’t until 10 AM this time … Continue reading Tree Day 2016
